Waratah Park Handicap -16th April
The scratch bunch of Dion Blair , John Anderson and Mick Deluca couldn’t make any inroads into the smooth running chopping block riders of Andrew Herlihen , Andrew Crawford, Allan Turnbull and (for a while) Phil Loxley who collected all in their path but still had to take a lap out of them. Steve Melrose couldn’t be shaken and took the win and promotion with outmarker Michael Jak second and Wayne the Fox Druerey third.

Next in but 1 second down was Troy Glennan and then last man off (and current course record holder) Shaun Higgerson came in a further two seconds down for third place.

Twilight Criterium 25th March 2005
After almost a week of rain riders were keen to make the most of the ‘good’ weather. After cramming in a big morning session and then lining up for the afternoon race Troy Glennan (Sutherland / MG Xpower) got his legs up to speed as he took off from the gun in the A grade race. Returning to the bunch after a few laps away to contest the first prime won by the Antman aka Anthony Challinor (Colnago- Caravello) and with the second won by wine connoisseur Gavin Bates (St George) Glennan. decided to launch an attack that saw him quickly joined by Antman, Mitch Pearson (Eurobadalla), Dave Treacy (RB - FRF)  and Luke Dale (Illawarra) who quickly put time into the main bunch. When the whistle blew for the third prime Glennan took off like the Easter Bunny and despite the efforts of the foursome won the prime and then continued to eventually lap the main bunch and win by over a minute over the chasing foursome. The Antman won the bunch gallop with Pearson third from Treacy and Dale.
B grade saw Luke Davison (RB -FRF) win the first prime and the race after all attacks were nullified and it all came down to a bunch finish with Jono Cridland (Southern Cross) second and Dion Blair (Sutherland) third. Hans Battaerd (Illawarra)  won the second prime.
C grade winner Paul Watzlaff (St George) proved too quick when he won not only the first prime but also a close fought bunch sprint from Steve Melrose (Sutherland) and Shaun Ballesty (RB -FRF)

Twilight Criterium 11th March 2005
With the departure of the GB squad the local riders finally got a bite at a cherry. The A grade race saw Tyler Mclachlan (Southern X) and Shaun Lewis (Southern Highlands / Yeti) establish an break early and the bunch seemed happy to keep them dangling until the whistle blew for the 1st prime and Professor Pete Hatton (Clarence St)  bridged across to the pair and won the prime. With Hatton and Lewis tuning up for the Australian MTB champs next week they kept the bunch at bay with Hatton also taking the 2nd prime and then keeping the pressure on to take the win from Lewis second and Mclachlan third.
B grade saw triathlete Oliver Reitmeier  (Sutherland) play the sprinters games to easily take the bunch sprint from Luke Davison (RB/FRF) and Jono Cridland (Southern X). Skater Daniel Thompson (Sutherland) won the prime.
Matt Guillan (Colnago / Caravello) not only snatched the prime but also  won a close fought bunch gallop (and promotion to B Grade) from Lewis Little (St. George) with Greg McCreanor third.

Twilight Criterium 4th March 2005
A stormy afternoon with drops of rain the size of tyre patches welcomed the riders to Waratah Park with only B grade getting a quicking dousing and a weekly shower for the UK lads
T
he GB squad were having their final twilight race before leaving for the World Cup in L.A. The A graders got off to a fast start with ‘Local’ Steve Williams (Sutherland), Troy Glennon (Sutherland /MG Xpower) and Matt Crampton (GB) escaping after a couple of laps and working well together sharing the Primes and building up a lead of almost 40 secs on the #2 circuit. At the changeover to the #3 circuit it all went pear shaped as Glennon punctured and a hard chasing bunch of 4 GB and 3 local riders drove to bring back the two escapees. As they all came back together Matt Brammeier (GB) countered and Glennon went after him and the two soon established a break which they held to the end with Brammeier holding off Glennnon in the two up sprint and Mark Cavendish (GB) taking third from the chase bunch.
B grade saw the young sprinters Jono Cridland (Southern Cross) take the bunch gallop from Keegan Aitchison (Southern Cross) WIth Oliver Reitmeier third. Prime to the ex pro veteran Richard Vial.
C grade saw Matt Guillan (Colnago / Caravello) take out a close fought bunch sprint from Tony Futia (Sutherland( and Lewis Little (St. George). First Lady Anna Sutton (Sutherland)

Twilight Criterium 18th February 2005
With the UCI Track World Cup over the GB squad U/23 track endurance squad were back ! The A grade race saw Ed Clancey (GB) teamate Matt Brammier (GB) and Troy Glennan (Sutherland / MG Xpower) ease off the front of the bunch after only 5 minutes (rapid) racing. Brammier took out the first prime but paid for it by having to return to the bunch to recuperate.  Clancey and Glennon kept driving and built up a healthy 30 second lead over the ‘chasing’ bunch of combined GB + Sutherland riders. Clancey took the second prime sprint and in the final sprint held Glennon off to make it 3-0 to the poms with the finale next week (the GB squad are off to Los Angeles for the Track World Championships)! Getting a super leadout from the GB squad for the bunch sprint and third place was Matt Crampton (GB).
Blake Field (St George) earned promotion to ‘A’ grade after winning the prime and then sprinting clear of the bunch to win the B grade finish with Richard Vial (Sutherland)second and Mark Goodwin (Sutherland ) third.
Junior Track Sprinter Geoff Hopkins (Southern Cross) earn’t promotion to B grade after easily taking out the bunch gallop from Phil Loxley (Sutherland) with Grant Bennet (Southern Cross)third. Prime went to David Parker (Sutherland) and the first lady was Jodie Mielke (Sutherland)

Twilight Criterium 11th February 2005
The A grade riders had an local only race as the visiting U/23 GB squad were competing in the current round of the UCI Track World Cup Races in
Sydney.
The A grade race was stop/start affair as mountain bikers and prime winners Peter Hatton (Clarence St) and Perren Delacour (Sutherland / Yeti) kept the attacks going. It looked like they had succeeeded when on the last lap Delacour and Hatton working with Trent and Clayton Butler (Macarthur) had a 10sec lead field but the bunch was renewing its interest and made contact with the escapees on the last climb and it was Gavin Bates (St George) who won the bunch sprint from Matt Wild (Soithern Cross) with Trent Butler hanging on for third.
B grade saw Mark Goodwin with a 20 sec lead with two laps remaining but again the Junior sprinters were lined up and Luke Davidson (RB/FRF) won the sprint from Jono Cridland (Southern Cross) and Blake Field (St George) third. Alex Frame (Sutherland) and Grant Patrick (Southern Cross) won the Primes.
The C grader made sure no one escaped and the bunch gallop was a Southern Cross Smorgasboard won by Stuart Lane from Matt Gullan with prime winner Geoff Hopkins taking thirdTwilight Criterium

11th February 2005
The U/23 GB squad who are getting tuned up for the upcoming UCI Track World Cup Races to be held in
Sydney (Feb 18-20) made another appearance after Geraint Thomas took out the win last week.  They intend to be back after the World Cup for a couple of weeks!
The ‘A’ grade race saw Sam Lee (NSWIS) going on the attack from the start and with the GB team just rolling over steadily Lee collected the first prime and was only 20 secs off the tail of the group. After ten minutes the British Leyland monster of Tom White, Geraint Thomas, Matt Brammeier, Ed Clancy, Matt Crampton and Mark Cavendish eventually fired up and Lee was soon pulled back into the bunch with the GB squad content to keep driving at the front thereby nulllifying any other attacks. The second prime went to Warren Scott (Colnago). On the last lap with only 10 riders remaining half GB and half local riders it was Manx rider Mark Cavendish (GB) who led the bunch from the final corner with Sam Lee in second and Jeff Hopkins third and thats how they remained leaving the rest of the field in their wake!.
B grade saw the ever youthful Richard Vial (Sutherland) take out the sprint after sitting comfortably in the bunch all night before taking his first and last turn in the last remaining metres. Second was Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) and third Jono Cridland (Southern Cross). Primes went to Jono Cridland and Luke Davidson (RB/FRF).
C grade saw Stuart Lane (Southern Cross) take out the sprint from Dave Parker (Sutherland) and Phil Loxley (Sutherland). Tayla Aithchison (Southern Cross) took out the Prime.

Twilight Criterium 4th February 2005
A week late but it was 1777 all over again when the poms invaded the Sutherland Shire to battle the natives but this time it was the Friday Night Criterium!
The GB squad are preparing for the UCI Track World Cup Races to be held in
Sydney (Feb 18-20) with the prospects of going on to the World Track Championships to be held in Los Angeles next month.
The ‘A’ grade race got off to a fast but steady pace until Andrew Kilday (St George) put in a blistering attack and was soon joined by three of the GB riders who upped the pace and sent Kilday off the back and into the arms of the chasing bunch. The GB trio of 2004 Junior World Track Champion and Junior Paris Roubaix Winner Geraint Thomas (T- Mobile), Matt Bremmeier and Mark Cavendish worked well together and were gaining a few seconds each lap on the #2 Circuit. The bunch was being policed by a couple more GB riders Ed Clancey and Matt Clampton so local rider Shaun Higgerson (RB/MG) decided to try and bridge across. He was quickly joined by Jeff Hopkins (Jelly Belly) and Ed Clancey and soon closed in rapidly on the trio until Hoppy exploded and Shaun made it across to make it across just with lots of local vocal support from the sidelines. Now it was four GB riders and himself in the break. With two Primes on offer it was time to work over the local and Shaun was kept busy responding to multiple attacks allowing Geraint Thomas to win both. On the final lap Thomas jumped clear just after Shaun had countered yet another attack and stayed away for the win with Shaun still managing second and Brammeier third. The GB riders promised to be back next week !
Despite numerous attacks none stuck and Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) took out the bunch sprint to win the ‘B’ grade race from last weeks winner Tyrone Attard (Macathur) and they also won promotion to ‘A’ grade. Oliver Reithmeier (Sutherland) was third and is intent on moving up ASAP so watch out. Paul Keen (Sutherland) and Jono Cridland (Southern Cross) took out the Primes.
Luke Davidson (RB/FRF) escaped with 2 laps to go and stayed away for an easy win and promotion to ‘B’ grade. The buncg sprint was won by Matt Guillan (Southern Cross) from Phol Loxley (Sutherland)

Twilight Criterium 28th January 2005
A humid 26c evening welcomed the current world and Olympic Kilometre champion Theo Bos (Rabobank) after leaving Holland earlier in the week it musy have seemed like he was stepping into a Sauna! A grade started with a blistering pace (and heat) and soon reduced the size of the field. Leaving nothing to chance and with three laps remaining Perren Delacour (Sutherland - YETI) jumped away leaving the sprinters to encourage each other to get on the front.  Delacour took his first win for the year with a 5 second gap. Warren Scott (St George- Colnago)  took out the bunch sprint from Ben Kirsten (St George) who lunged past Steve Fitzpatrick (St George) in the last few centimetres.
B grade saw triathletes Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) and Oliver Reitmieier (Sutherland) always on the attack and with two laps to go the duo dangled off the front with Aaron Richardson (Easts) in between. Climbing the hill on the last lap the front runners of the bunch made contact and Tyrone Attard led the bunch home for the win from survivor Richardson and Matt Hood (St George) third.
The C graders were happy to bide their time until the last couple of laps that saw Peter Lang (Sutherland) take the sprint easily from Tony Futia (Sutherland) and Darian Wendt (Sutherland)

Congratulations to Sutherland - MG rider Troy Glennan who won the KOM Jersey in the Tour of Wellington, New Zealand. Teammate and local Shaun Higgerson won the 4th Stage and finished 11th Overall

Twilight Criterium 21st January 2005
‘A’ grade winner for the last two weeks Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) looked to be in fine form  after taking out the first prime from Troy Glennan (Sutherland - MG). The pair kept the pressure on after the first prime and a breakaway soon formed joined by David Treacy (RBCC - FRF) and Dan Brickell (Sutherland) quickly gaining time on a hesitant bunch.  With the human Derny Glennan going like a man possesed the bunch continued to lose time despite encouragment from Peter Fitzpatrck and Ben Kirsten (St George). Glennan took the second and third Prime and then kicked away from his escapees for a clear win with Hopkins second and Treacy third.
MTB’r Andrew Arthur (Sutherland) made sure he stayed away from the sprinters as he jumped away from the bunch with 3 laps to go for a clear win and promotion to A grade. Matt Hood (St George won the bunch sprint from Alex Frame (Sutherland). Jono Cridland (SX) and Oliver Reithmeier (SSCC) took the two primes on offer.
Dion Blair (Sutherland) may have only just started racing but already has been promoted to B grade after an easy win after powering away on the final lap field in C grade. Prime winner  Luke Davidson (RBCC) took the bunch gallop from Peter Cooper (Sutherland).

Australian 2005 Championships
Congratulations to Troy Glennan who despite a puncture still managed a 4th place in the Elite Men’s Individual timetrial at Echuga, SA. Other solid placings for SSCC riders were Dan Brickell in 6th and Mark Wall 16th.
Robbie Mcewen won the Road Race helped by new teamate workhorse Cadel Evans. Mark lasted to halfway before retiring and both Troy and Dan punctured in the Road Race and were unable to rejoin the main bunch.
Well done to local rider Chris Sutton who won the Mens Under 23 Category.

Twilight Criterium 14h January 2005
The temperature had been in the 30s all week and as the cooler southerlies blew in on friday afternoon the storm clouds made a welcome deposit over Sydney.
Despite the threat of more rain a select group of riders still wanted to race.
‘A’ grades winner from last week Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) made it two out of two after joining solo escapee Joel Pearson (Warragul) with 10 minutes remaining the two powered away and Jeff kicked home easily for the win with Joel second and Jono Cridland (Southern Cross) taking the bunch gallop.
The combined the B and C grade races (due to the fairweather riders staying away) played into the hands of the sprinters with Blake Field (St. George)   taking the B grade sprint from Troy Fisher (Sutherland) and David Mcleod (Macarthur) third.
C grade saw Luke Davidson (Randwick Botany) take the sprint from Phil Loxley (Sutherland) and Darian Wendt (Sutherland).

Twilight Criterium 7th January 2005
With the ranks swelled by a bevy of Pro riders tuning up for the Australian Road Championships next weekend it was time to see who was going to deliver the goods.
The ‘A’ grade race was on from the start with Troy Glennan (Sutherland) and Sam Lee (St. George) instigating many of the attacks with Chris Sutton (St. George/FDJeux) and Peter Hatton (Clarence St.) always ready to go with the attacks. The lead group changed almost every lap but could never quite escape the clutches of the main gruppetto which contained plenty of firepower including Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly), Matt White (Cofidis), Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) and a rejuvenated Mark Jewel (Illawarra) ensuring they kept in touch. With 3 laps remaining White, Sutton, Jewel and Wayne Anderson (Sutherland) established a small break and with 2 to go Hatton had bridged across to aid the escapees. Bell Lap saw the five leaders with a slender six second lead with what remained of the main gruppetto chasing hard. Hopkins used his explosive power to join the leaders on the final climb to latch onto White and Hatton. White  led them onto the home straight and kept Hatton positioned on his left hip but Hopkins sprint power was too strong and he won the gallop  narrowly from Hatton and White.
B grades fast paced race with lots of attacks saw plenty of retirements but Triathlete Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) endurance in a long lead out to hold off last weeks winner Junior MTB’r Andrew Arthur (Sutherland) with the evergreen Richard Vial (Sutherland) third.
Paul Maurer (Sutherland) had a comfortable win in C grade after going clear of the bunch with Allan Turnbull (Sutherland) with 5 laps to go. On the final lap Maurer eased away from Turnbull on the final climb with Royce Herbert (Sutherland) unable to bridge across to the two leaders but holding on for third place

Thank you everyone for a great night of racing and for your generous donations for the Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsunamis Appeal.
