Twilight Racing 2003/2004 Begins
|
|
|
Twilight Criterium 31st Dec 2004 Latest Sutherland addition Troy Glennan lit the blue touch paper early for the New Year’s Eve ‘A’ grade race. Chris Guillan (Southern Cross), Dave Treacy (FRF/RBCC) and Jeff Jones (CyclingNews/RBCC) made an early escape on the number 2 circuit and once Glennan had bridged across they established a 40 sec lead before changing to the hilly #3 Circuit. Glennan then kicked away from the lead group eventually winning by over 1 minute. Jones led the trio onto the home strait only to be overhauled by the ever improving junior rider Chris Guillan with Treacy in tow for third. B grade saw Junior MTB’r Andrew Arthur (Sutherland) take the win after establishing a break early in the race with Kate Nichols (Clarence St) second. The pair worked well together to and continued to gain time as the bunch made sporadic moves to bring them back. Blake Field (St George) took the bunch gallop from Veteran rider Richard Vial (Sutherland). C Grade played into the sprinters hands/legs with the bunch staying together and saw junior Matt Guillan (Southern Cross) win the sprint holding off Royce Herbert (Sutherland) and Phil Loxley (Sutherland)
Twilight Criterium 3rd December 2004 A mild 21 evening with a steady southerly breeze greeted the riders to their weekly dose of competition on the hilly Sutherland circuit. Prof. Peter Hatton (Clarence St) performed an assessment after the first prime won by Wazza Scott (St George) that the bunches probability in catching a solo break was inversely proportional to the number of sprinters in the bunch minus the number of friendly MTB’rs multiplied by those hanging on for grim death down the back and left the bunch behind claiming the second prime and first place followed 30 secs later by last weeks winner Peter Fitzpatrick (St. George) with Scott third and Dan Brickell (Sutherland) fourth. Alex Frame (Sutherland) was able to go home and feed the wife and kids this week after winning the B grade bunch sprint. Team mate Richard Vial took Frame to the front in the last laps and no one could match the firepower Vial unleashed as the bunch trickled in. Tyrone Attard (Penrith) was second and Matt Hood (St George) third. Prime winners were Paul Kean (Illawara) and Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) After a blistering attack from the start line by Tim Rundle (Sutherland) there were numerous attacks all race but the ever improving Troy Fisher (Sutherland) took out the bunch gallop in C grade from James Rankin (Sutherland) second and David Macefield (Mcarthur) third Phil Loxley was the Prime winner.Twilight Criterium 26th November 2004 A beautiful 23c summers evening with a slight southerly breeze greeted the riders. Peter Fitzpatrick (St. George) kept the sprinters green jersey in the family by winning the A grade dash for the line after overhauling Dan ‘Mullet’ Brickell (Sutherland) in the final yards with Prof. Peter Hatton (Clarence St) taking third. Prime winners were Dan Beresford (Sutherland) and Peter Jones (Illawarra). In B Grade Matt Wild (Southern X) showed his fast finishing again by taking out the gallop from Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) and Tyrone Attard third. Primes went to Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) and Aaron Richardson (Eastern Suburbs). C Grade was a Sutherland Trivecta. Peter Cooper and Bob ‘Sit-on’ Knezevic made a break with 4 laps remaining and worked well together until the last lap where Pete kicked away from Bob on the last lap climb to take the win with Bob second and Troy Fisher taking out the bunch gallop. The prime went to Michael JaK (Sutherland)Twilight Criterium 19th November 2004 The Hot and sultry conditions endured for the last few days were replaced by overcast and threatening skies as a southerly blew in and provided intermittent showers throughout the evening. When Trent Butler (Lidcome Auburn) shot past the other riders to take the first prime it looked like he had the A grade win in the bag.... then with the Gruppetto Compactobunch all together comingg into the bunch sprint Perren Delacour (Sutherland - YETI) found the nitrox switch to convincingly take the win with Butler second and Peter Jones (Illawarra) third. B grade saw the welcome return of (the Danish based S.A.T.S team rider) Rochelle Gilmore who this year has had more than her fair share of setbacks with a few crashes and a knee operations to contend with. Rochelle was just pipped on the line by fast finisher Matt Wild (Southern Cross) with Triathlete Paul Ambrose (Sutherland) third. C grade was a Sutherland Trivecta with some developing new riders soon destined for B grade. Royce Herbert took out the bunch gallop from Anthony Roberson in second and Troy Fischer third.
Twilight Criterium Series 12th November A warm balmy evening saw over 70 riders competing in the Twilight Criteriums. A grade looked for an upset when the duo of Dave Treacy (St. George) and Danny Beresford (Sutherland) escaped from the clutches of the bunch with 5 laps remaining. However Beresford felt the strain and dropped back to the bunch with Treacy left dangling. Six riders made the break across to Treacy with 2 laps remaining and worked well together to hold off the chase pack. Steve Fitzpatrick was amongst the seven and again his sprint was too strong for Nelson Santos (LA) and Troy Glennon (St. G). The prime went to Peter Hatton (Clarence St). B Grade saw close racing with plenty of attacks going in but a bunch finish saw Tyrone Attard (Penrith) take the sprint from Matt Wild (Southern Cross) and Matt Hood (St G) third. Prime Winners were Phil Bray (Sutherland) and Daniel Thompson (Sutherland). C Grade was another bunch gallop with Brendon Neilly (Sutherland) taking the gallop from Prime winner Stuart Lane (Southern Cross) with Phil ‘Legs’ Loxley third.
Club Tour to Bundanoon 30+31st Oct Inc Hill Climb Champs Mild but sunny weather (even at the top of Macquarie Pass) provided the riders with optimal conditions in which to reach the Bundanoon Hotel. After Beloki Wood settled down the bunch hummed along to the bottom of the pass where ‘I haven’t touched my bike for weeks’ Delacour smoked everyone with a new club record time of 32.55. After numerous Pies and Pasties it was off to the Bundanoon Hotel for some refreshment and Quilt time. Day 2 saw some sore heads and tired legs but everyone gave their all with a strong finish back to the clubhouse. Special thanks to George at Endeavour Cycles for the Prizes and use of the Support Van. Col Poulton for his support and timing. Cookie and Richard Vial for driving and Dean Mason for providing the best sit in the bunch !
Waratah Park Handicap 16th Oct 2004 The Handicap is always a favourite event for the masochists and only once the bunches are underway can the true form of the “I haven’t ridden for 10 years” “been on an Iron lung this week” “had flu this week” riders be dispelled as they blow up the other riders in their bunch! The outmarkers consisting of Chris Booth, Mark Nicholls and Craig Hawkins managed to take the win from a hard chasing Scratch and block groups. The fast recovering (and Handicappers mate) Nicholls left his compatriots to solo in just ahead of Hawkins and 20 secs ahead of the chasing groups with the fastest man from the scratch group Andrew Kilday taking third overall and Fastest time.
If you are contemplating participation in the twilight series you will need to get racing, there are only a few club races on saturdays left to get up to speed.
Omnium 9th Oct 2004 The Omnium event consisted of a Points Race a Scratch Race and an Elimination (or Miss ‘n Out) all held on the relatively flat 950m #2 circuit. The combined A/B event saw some fierce sprinting in the first event with Andrew Kilday and Darren Cash breaking away after the first sprint and then going hammer and tong every 3 laps of the 15 lap event. Cashie took the win from Kilday with Mark Wall third and Peter Jones fourth. The 12 lap scratch race was won by Mark Wall after a lovely lead out from Peter Jones and with Kilday third and Cashie fourth. The elimination saw the current overall leader Mark Wall eliminated early and it was Peter Jones came from nowhere to take the win and the overall .
The C/D grade saw Phil ‘Pettachi’ Loxley comfortably winning the Points Race and Scratch Race but was unpleasantly surprised when he was eliminated first in the final race but still had the points to win the Overall. If you are contemplating participation in the twilight series you will need to get racing, there are only a few club races on saturdays left to get up to speed.
Hornsby to Warners Bay 160km Sun 26th Sep This was the second of the three Category 1 Teams events and the top class field, warm weather conditions and a testing course soon saw the field spread out over many km’s. After winning the KOM over the Moonie Moonie climb Ben Brooks (was was in the Cheeky Monkey Team) kept up the aggressive attacking that eventually split the field and saw the pro rider (who normally rides for Jelly Belly in the USA) also take out the win in a sprint finish from Robert Mclachlan (Caravello) and David Tanner (Sella Italia). Highest placed Sutho team rider was 20 yr old Peter Spencer in 12th with Daniel Brickell 18th, Darren Cash 20th and Andrew Kilday 25th. Brad and Col were forced to withdraw at the 100km mark as they were outside the 10minute cutoff from the leaders. A big thankyou to Geoff Cook aka Cookie Monster and George Poulos from Endeavour Cycles who provided support for the Race. Interclub at Randwick Botany Sat 25th Sep Thankyou to the Randwick Botany club who made us most welcome. It was a typical Heffron Park day, a strong headwind along the back of the course and an assisting tailwind on the home straight. Congratulations to all the Sutherland Riders who made the trip to Heffron with lots of teamwork practice paying off. Riders who made the podium were Darian Wendt 3rd ‘D’, Neil Thorburn 2nd ‘C’ , Mark ‘Speedy Gonzales’ Goodwin 1st ‘C’ and John Peters 2nd ‘B’. Handicap Waratah Park 18th Sep With 3 laps to go the scratch riders comprising of Darren Bender and Ian Bradford finally caught the 8 outmarkers on the last lap Bob Knezevic and John Magic Shoes Peters did a flyer only to be caught and passed by Bradford on the home straight with Peters taking second and Neil Thorburn third.
Grafton to Inverell Congratulations to all the riders who took part in the Classic Race, Kev, Col, Ed, Harry, Dan and Emma
Australian Road Champs Qld Well done to Dan Brickel who was 7th in the TT and 11th in the Road race. Congratulations also to Tyler Mclachlan (Southern Cross) who won silver in the U/19 RR and Gold in the Criterium l Canberra 12 Hour MTB Enduro Congratulations to the Sutherland Riders of Paul O'neill, Scott Nolan, Brad Glennan (St G), Pearce Anderson and Wayne Anderson. They won the category of team fives with 21 laps over second place who completed 20 laps. Pearce Anderson did the fastest lap of the team 29:36. Fastest lap of the day was Matt Fleming 27:55 who is definitely married to Kimberly not Josh as reported on SBS
Club Road Race Champs Waratah Park 11th Sep With riders competing in their age groups rather than the normal grading saw the field split up quickly in all the divisions. After riding up from Wollongong as a warm up Jeff Gray (Illawarra) still had the legs left to take the gallop from Kevin Donovan and Andrew Herlihen. The prime went to Paul McKenzie. The C grade race saw the ‘3 Amigos’ of Phil Loxley, Bob Knezevic and Allan Turnbull keep going after Bob won the prime leaving the main group in pieces and that’s ghow they finished Snowball Point Score 28th August 2004 With a sprint every 2nd lap on the number 2 circuit and with more accumulating on every sprint saw some fierce sprinting initially and legs of jelly at the end! Phil Loxley took out the C/D combined event with 22 points just edging out Bob Knezevic for second on 19 with the crumbs picked up by Darian Wendt for third on 3 points and Craig Hawkins fourth after winning the initial 1 pointer. The A/B combine saw Ian Bradford on 18 points win the last sprint and beat Darren Bender into second by 1 point, third was John Peters on 9 points with Paul Mckenzie 4th on 7 points. Some Photo’s from the TTT are now online, Hi Res available on CD more to come!!!Watkins Real Estate Espresso Series 7th Aug A cool but sunny morning with a light southerly breeze greeted the riders for the A/B combined race. Recently returned Belgium pot rider Daniel Brickell took the win after jumping clear with Phil Neeves after Mark Jewell (Illawarra) took the prime and that was the order they finished. The B graders were all together for a bunch gallop which saw late riser Kev Donovan take the win from Daniel Thompson and Paul Mckenzie. C grade saw new member Brad Abdy keep the pressure on all race and managed to Keep Bob Knezevic behind him for the win with Prime winner Andrew Crawford picking up third.Tasman Sheild TT Results A sunny morning with no wind saw Dean Mason joined this time by other (fairweather) clubmates after the last session was postponed. The Elite category saw Paul O’Neill win the event in a time of 25.20 after Darren Cash (who would have won with 24.21) made a tardy start to the event and was penalised 11 mins. Phil Neeves took out third with 26.29. In the masters category Wayne Druery is finding his form after his holiday to easily win in 27.05 from Martin Hoyle in 30.04. The Ladies was won by the ever consistent Emma Lovelock in 31.42.
Sat 17th July Tasman Sheild Criterium The blustery southerly wind and the threat of showers kept many riders away from the first stage of this trophy event (after the TT was postponed). In the Elite Mens Race Josh Wall from (Illawarra) broke away from the pack and practiced his time trialling for 20mins to take the win with his club mate Peter Jones taking the bunch gallop from Paul Mckenzie and Phil Neves. The Masters and ladies race saw Ian Bradford and Col Young elope from the bunch after 20 mins with Ian being the Groom and Col the Best man. The closely fought bunch gallop was brought home by Andrew Herlihen with Emma Lovelock being the first lady over the line. Sat 24th July will be the Tasman Road Race at Waratah Park and the 31st will see the TT in the morning at Waterfall with a club race in the afternoon.5th June Watkins Real Estate - Espresso Race A combined A and B grade saw Gary Libro taking it easy... by attacking the combined bunch with 5 laps to go only to be caught in the last few yards by the charging bunch headed by Junior MTB’r Justin Case (Clarence St)who took the gallop from Peter Jones (Illawarra) second and Steve Fitzpatrick (St George) third for the A Grade category. A well deserved win for Gary Libro with Kev Donovan (Sutherland) second and Wayne Druery (Sutherland) third. Prime to PAul Kean (Illawarra)
A fast turn of pace ensured no one escaped from the C Grade bunch which saw Allan Turnbull (Sutherland) win the bunch sprint from Brendon Neilly (Sutherland) second and Jim Eades (Southern Cross) third. Prime to Kurt Adams (Bicisport)
29th May Geoff Bradbury Tour - Waratah Park A pointscore totaling the results of the Criterium Timetrial and Road race plus bonus points for the KOM and Prime provided for competitive racing in all the grades. A grade TT and Road Race winner Darren Cash was just too fit and fast in the end and held off Paul O’neill winner of the Criterium to win the Overall with Ian Bradford third. B Grade saw Paul Kean dominate the Criterium and Time Trial and despite blowing up on the Road Race had enough to secure the GC with Daniel Thompson second and Wayne Druery third C Grade saw Andrew Herlihen take out the Criterium and Road Race and the Overall and win a free ticket to B grade with some great riding. In second overall was Bob Knezevic and third Allan Turnbull. D grade saw Dean Mason dominate all the races to take the GC and also get a promotion to C grade. Daryl Moylan was second overall and Chris Booth third. Congratulations to all of those who raced and supported the events. Photos and Results Here.
22nd May Waratah Park Criteriums After Paul Mckenzie took the first prime Ian Bradford took the initiative and combined with Kev Donovan and Wayne Druery to escape the cluthes of the bunch and held that at 10 -15 secs for the remainder of the race. Last time up the hill Ian applied the pressure and got away with Jags and Wayne following and Mckenzie taking the bunch gallop. Although C + D started together the C graders soon made the pace too high on the #3 circuit for all the D graders except for Tony Unicomb who took out the D grade with Dean Mason and Daryl Moylan a half lap down. Andrew Herlihenagain showed his sprinting power to overhaul Peter Cooper and Bob Knezevic in the gallop
Results from the Illawarra Interclub 15 May Report Courtesy Garry Doughty A record number of 70 riders participated in the scratch races at West Dapto last Sunday. Sixteen came from the Sutherland Club. Near perfect conditions assisted to make the racing fast and furious. The fact that the races were held over the 9km short course also added to the speed and ferocity of some of the races. A, B and C grades all raced five laps for their 45km distance while D grade raced 4 laps for their 36km. While the A grade race was attack after attack it was the 28 riders in the B grade race that produced the quickest time on the day of 1:04:50, almost a minute faster than A grade. There were many attempted breakaways in A grade but the one that was successful was by Adam Rourke and Dylan Forbes, who came in first and second. The pair crossed the line 6 seconds in front of the bunch that was led over the line by Peter Jones. Sutherland’s Ian Bradford was very aggressive in the B grade race, but it wasn’t until he teamed up with Mark Davis that they were able to break the stranglehold of the bunch. The two worked very well together and crossed the line1:48 infront of the bunch and third place getter Kevin Donovan(Sutherland). C grade also had a large number of riders willing to try and get away even though there were 20 riders in the race. But in the end it all came down to a bunch sprint where Jason Johnson did what he does best and crossed the line in first place. The second place sprint was extremely close with Andrew Crawford(Sutherland) just holding off a very determined Ernie Hall. Two Sutherland riders combined in the decisive breakaway in the D grade race and held off the bunch to win by 30 seconds. Dean Mason sprinted well and crossed the line just ahead of club mate Tim Rundle, both riders had given it their all. Vince O’Dwyer led the bunch sprint out and put 14 seconds into them in the final straight for a deserved third place. Club president Pat Delahunty made the presentations for the race and concurred with Sutherland’s John Peters that the combine was a good success.
Cootamundra - Haycarters 70km Handicap Congratulations to Mark Wall who won the race at the weekend. Cappucino’s all round, Grazia !
Bathurst Women’s Tour Congratulations to Anna Sutton Winner of B grade at the Bathurst tour after winning two of the 3 stages!

Points Race - Waratah Park 8th May 2004 Like a Madison without the sling ? The C+D graders were again tested with a Points Race with a difference. maybe they were the only ones who figured out how to get points but the Team of Andrew Herlihen and Phil Loxley cleaned up on 19 pts with Peter Cooper and Greg Wormsley second on 14 and Bob Knezevic and Craig Hawkins on 9 also Alan Turnbull and Dean Mason on 9. The A+B grade was a City versus Country with another win for the country with Joe McDonald (Illawarra) devouring all the points with assistance from Jeff Gray and Tim Devlin whilst Ian Bradford, Paul Mckewen and Mick Deluca were left to pick up the morsals!
Watkins Espresso Series A mild 19c winters morning with hardly any wind saw close racing in all grades with the A Grade race going to Daniel Brickell (SSCC) who just held off Bret Townsend (SSCC) and Joe McDonnell (Illawarra) in the dash for the line. Mark Wall took out the Prime. B grade saw Skater Daniel Thompson take the sprint narrowly from Neil Thorburn and Fabrizio Tettoni (All SSCC). In C grade the Girl Power trio of Emma , Kerry and Sarah kept the guys in trouble but couldn’t hold on in the final sprint which saw Alan Townsend take the Gallop from Andrew Herlihen and Mark Nicholls (All SSCC)

25th April SSCC Open at Waratah Park Despite competing events the A,B,C and D Grade races were all well attended and saw some exciting racing. D grade saw Junior U/19 rider Lewis Gailand of the Port Stephens club show his sprint form as he easily took the first prime and then the bunch gallop from Ron Rutherford (Northern Districts) and Lee Cameron (Eastern Suburbs) with Alan Shepard (Sydney CC) 4th. 1st SSCC rider was Dean Mason after Emma Lovelock decided that age should come before beauty! C grade saw Mark Wall (Sutherland) take the 1st Prime and then David Tracey (St George) the 2nd Tracey then kept going with a solo breakaway that lasted until 3 laps to go where he was collected by the bunch. In the gallop for the line Mark Wall took the win from Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) and Scott Ford (Sutherland with Matt Hood (St George) 4th. B Grade saw David Wyman (LACC) easily take the win and the second prime from Josh Marsden (RBCC) who was the winner of the 1st prime , Charlie Topfer (LACC) and Grant Patrick (Southern Cross).the third prime was won by Chris Guillan (Southern Cross) The A Grade event saw the Clarence St riders on the attack with Daniel Rutherford (CSCC) taking out the first prime and then Keith Evans (Midland) taking the second prime. Brad Mils (CSCC) immediately countered and started the move of the day by getting teammate Klayton Smith, Anthony Challiner (Parramatta) and David Vogels (SDCC) into a well working break. The only person to bridge across was Stephen Evans (Midland) and they managed to hold the break at 30 secs for the remainder of the race with Brad Mills taking out the two remaining primes. Klayton Smith took the win from Evans with Challinor third and Mills fourth. Perren Delacour was the first Sutherland rider.
1The Scratch group of Gary Libro (who got fastest time), Col Young, Kev Donovan, Mark Wall, Ian Russell and Darren Bender finished a half lap down on the Handicap winner Andrew Herlimen. Herlimen started in the limit group who all showed a quick turn of pace in the early laps (much to the detriment of the others in his group) and Herlimen successfully made contact with the well “coached” group of Martin Hoyle, Emma Lovelock, John Brennan and Darian Wendt. Now they had to try and get rid of him to no avail ! Martin Hoyle brought in the main bunch from Darian and Emma and John with Peter Cooper who also started in the limit group soloing in for 6th 0th April Ominium Waratah Park

Steve Fitzpatrick (St.George) instigated a break after the 1st prime (won by Chris Guillan - Southern Cross) that saw Dan Brickell (Sutherland) and eventually Sam ‘Big Dog’ (after his rear mech cable broke) Lee leave the rest behind and collect the remaining primes and that’s the order they finished. B grade saw Dylan Forbes from Illawarra again on the attack collecting 3 primes before being scooped up by the bunch. Matt Hood (St George) take the bunch sprint from Daniel Thompson (Sutherland) and making his final appearance before the immigration officials caught up with him David Warwick (Sutherland) for third. C grade saw fast finisher James Rankin take the bunch gallop from Stephen Barclay and Mark Nicholls (All Sutherland) with the primes going to Mark and Grant Beamish
Twilight Racing 19th Mar ‘04 A beautiful autumn evening of 23c with a light southerly to cool off the sprinters on the home straight saw bunch finishes in all of the grades. Sam Lee (St George) took out the A grade sprint from Perren Delacour (Sutherland) and Peter Jones (Illawarra) third. The prime went to newly promoted Scott Ford (Sutherland). B Grade saw Trent Butler (Lidcombe/Auburn) take the sprint comfortably from the Southern Cross lead out of Keegan Aitchison and Grant Patrick. C grade was an all Sutherland affair with another strong sprint from Peter Lang holding off Darian Wendt and Peter Cooper. The prime went to James Rankin
Twilight Racing 12th Mar ‘04 The rain squalls kept coming on Friday despite the record 40C + temps at the beginning of the week. Only the ‘Belgium hard men’ of C and B grade ventured forth with A grade preferring the Boyles Hotel for a post race debriefing. In B grade David Warwick ‘fresh’ from the Jindabyne training camp went on the attack from lap one. He eventually broke away with Mick de Luca and the two stayed away with Dave taking the Prime and the win with Mick second and Mark Thompson winning the bunch gallop for third. C grade saw the bunch stay intact with Phil Loxley winning the prime and the closely fought bunch sprint from Darian Wendt second and John Brennan third. (All Sutherland)Twilight Racing 5th Mar ‘04 A pleasant 24c evening with a light southerly breeze provided a comfortable evenings racing at Waratah Park. A grade saw the early withdrawal of sprinter Steve Fitzpatrick who was still suffering the effects of a fall at last weekends track carnival leaving the field sprint open to all. With 5 laps to go MTB’r Josh Flemming (FELT) decided it was time to go it alone but was soon joined by Brett Townsend (Sutherland) with the rest of the bunch at 30secs. At 2 laps to go Flemming and Townsend were still clear vith a group of 3 riders trying to bridge the gap. On the final lap The 3 riders were collected by the bunch with 200m to go but still ahead were Townsend who won the sprint from Flemming with Peter Jones (Illawarra) taking the bunch gallop for third (and the 2 primes). B grade saw Paul Mckenzie pay for an early solo getaway by being dropped later in the race with the baton taken up by Dylan Forbes (Illawarra) who kept going after winning the prime and almost held off the bunch but had to be content with second after he was collected in the last 100m by Trent Butler (Lidcombe Auburn) but held off Keegan Aithchison (Southern Cross) who was third. Bob Knezevic (Sutherland) not only won the bunch gallop in C grade but also a one way ticket to B grade with his awesome sprint display. Hot on his heels were Peter Lang (Sutherland) second and Peter Hopper (Manly) third. The Prime was won by James Rankin (Sutherland) who showed why you should never sit up before the line.
Twilight Racing 27th Feb ‘04 A rainy first half of the week and a cool change saw a mild 23c evening with a light southerly breeze facing riders on the home straight. Twilight Criterium 13th Feb 2004 Another humid sultry summers evening with 26c and a light southerly in the riders faces on the home straight. With some riders still recovering from Sunstroke and abrasions inflicted from the 40c+ Canberra tour last weekend, riders were happy to sit back and let someone else do the work. Geoff Cook (Sutherland) went on the offensive from the gun and was dangling in front of the bunch until they heard the whistle for the first prime which brought them all back together and saw Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) in the money. Cook again kept going and was soon joined by Monsieur Brow (aka Shaun Higgerson Randwick / FRF) and the Prof (Peter Hatton - Clarence St). The trio managed to hold the sprinter filled bunch at around 20 secs but could not reel them back in. The Prof won the the 2nd prime and finshed 2nd overall with Monsieur Brow taking the win and the Cookie Monster third. B grade saw Tim Adams(Nowra) take the bunch sprint and the prime comfortably despite efforts of a snake intent on crossing the track mid race. Brett Townsend (Sutherland) was second and Grant Patrick third (Southern Cross). Womens Australian Road Champ Leonie Aisbett (Paramatta) gave the boys a good caning in C grade taking both the prime and the win from Stephen Barclay (Sutherland) and Darren Wendt (Sutherland). I

Twilight Race Series The Twilight Races are now running every Friday evening throughout the summer. Twilight Criterium 6th Feb 2004 With a lot of the local riders attending the Canberra tour this weekend numbers were down but the racing and the temp (31c) were both hot!. Steve Williams (Sutherland) riding his last friday night of the season before he departs on his Airport Fire Fighting training wanted to get a result and signalled his intention by taking out the first Prime with a ‘Pettachi’ like sprint . The high ‘A’ Grade pace saw riders being shelled and the lead bunch whittled down to single digits. Last week’s winner Chris Pascoe won the second prime and with only 5 laps remaining the bunch had reduced to a sprint derby of 5 riders Williams, Pascoe, Chris Guillan (SX), Dave Treacy (StG) and Josh Flemming (SORCC). Williams led out the sprint on to the home straight and the rest of the bunch had no answer with Pascoe holding on for second and Guillan third. B Grade saw Joe Mc Donnell take out the win, the prime and a free trip to A Grade next week! After the first prime Paul McKenzie (Sutherland) went on the attack and a group of 8 went away leaving the rest of the riders strung out and unable to get back on. The group stayed away and in the bunch gallop Mcdonnell just held off the ever improving Keegan Aitchison (SX) with Grant Patrick (SX) 3rd who were desperately trying to hold off Katie Brown (StG). C Grade saw strongman Craig Waghorn (LA) go on the attack early, won the first prime and then returned to the bunch who were content to finish in bunch gallop. In the sprint Graham Horn took the sprint from Bob Knezevic and Stephen Barclay (all Sutherland) after Waghorn let them off lightly after he had pulled his foot at the bottom of the circuit.
3rd Wildside MTB powered by SRAM - NE Tasmania, Australia, Jan 31-Feb 3, 2004 Congratulations to club members Perren Delacour (3rd in the Men-Open Overall), Saul Britton, Anna Sutton (5th Overall) and Alison Anderson on their great rides in this epic event. Twighlight Criterium 30th Jan 2004 Another sultry summers evening (23c witha light southerly) plus a few large raindrops to keep the dust down. In A Grade Shaun Higgerson (Randwick Botany) aka ‘the Brow’ took out the win showing that he is not just a pretty face (despite the pierced eyebrow). After escaping the clutches of the sprinters with Strong Man Sammy Lee (St George) in the last few laps ‘Brow’ won the sprint from Lee and left Chris Pascoe (Dubbo) to take home third from a small chasing group which contained some of the top sprinters (Fitzpatrick, Wozza and Hopkins) who wanted a bunch finish followed by the main field. Primes to Mich Pearson (Eurobadalla) and Sam Lee. B grade saw a more sedate pace this week with a bunch gallop taken oiut by G. Patrick (Southern Cross) from Scott Ford (Sutherland) and Adam Proudlock (Southern Cross). Primes to Ford and Tim Adams. With Michelle Duval (Southern Cross) promoting herself to B grade. the C grade sprint was open to all. Bob Knezevic (Sutherland) took out the close fought sprint finish from J Trigg (Southern Cross) second and A Wild (Southern Cross) third. Prime Mark Nicholls (Sutherland)

Twilight Criteriums 23rd Jan 2003 A cool 23c evening with a gentle assisting tailwind on the home straight saw some fast racing in all the grades With the first 15 minutes racing on the flatter #2 circuit before moving onto #3 for A + B grades high average speeds were the par. In A grade Richard Vollebregt (Southern Highlands) made his usual tactical approach of putting his head down and going from the gun with Steve Williams (Sutherland) also making a number of attacks which strung and splintered the bunch but they kept regrouping and in the end ‘Trackie’ Steve Fitzpatrick (St George) again showed his sprint prowess by leading from the final bend and aided by the tailwind took an easy win with Peter Hatton (Clarence St) second and Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) third. Prime Richard Vollebregt. Lots of attacks kept the B grades on their toes but again the ever improving Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) took the sprint from Adrian Cooper (Illawarra) and Brett Townsend (Sutherland ) taking third and the prime. C grade saw Michelle Duvall (Southern Cross) outsprint the bunch with Martin Snowdon (Sutherland) second and Graham Horn (Sutherland) third. Twilight Racing - 16th January 2004 With Riders away at the Australian champs and Canberra MTB Tour, it was going to be a quiet friday night. Just to dampen the enthusiasm the drought over Sydney was broken with a tropical downfall bringing warm and 100% humidity (aka rain) conditions. With the criteriums cancelled for the evening the main event was the Sausage Sandwich eating contest easily won by John Anderson. John managed to consume 13 Sausage & Onion sandwiches and 2.5 litres of Coca Cola! Second was birthday boy ‘Jags’ Donovan with 8 and third Col Poulton with 6 and a pint of warm stout.
Twilight Racing - 9th January 2004 Another warm 25c evening assisted by a helpful tailwind on the home straight ensured that the pace was going to be high in all the grades. Despite a number of riders participating in the “Jayco Bay Classic Series” the ‘A’ grade bunch were taking no prisoners and the high pace saw only half the field finishing. From the gun Richard Volebregt (Southern Highlands) took off like a Canberra bushfire and was soon joined by Steve Williams (Sutherland) and a handful of riders including Justin Case (Clarence St) who took out the first prime and then paid the price by beginning the exodus of riders to the chasing group leaving only Volebregt and Williams remainingat a gap of 20 secs to the chasing group. With only 6 laps remaining a successful bridge by Peter Hatton (Clarence St) and Shaun ‘Eyebrow’ Higgerson (Randwick Botany) saw some fresh legs add to the escapees. Hatton took out the second prime but paid the price as Higgerson easily won the race from Hatton second and Volebregt third. After convincing the starters with his story of how he hasn’t been on the bike for a year, recently had a lung and kidney removed etc Matt ‘B’ Grade Bazzano (St. George) was content to leave it to the sprint after a few aborted attempts at escaping the clutches of B grade. Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) was second and Adam Proudlock third. The prime went to Joe McDonnell (Illawarra). C Grade saw lots of aggressive attacking but again all came down to a bunch finish with Simon Andrews (Sutherland) taking out the sprint from Graham Horn (Sutherland) and Michelle Duval (Southern Cross) third. The prime went to Craig Waghorn (Lidcombe-Auburn) D grade saw Brian Hopkins (Southern Cross) the clear winner from Chris Booth (Sutherland) and Barry Eadie (Sutherland)
Twilight Racing - 2nd January 2004 The New Years resolution to get rid of the xmas pudding, trifle, chocolates, brandy snaps etc saw a number of new riders line up on a warm 25c evening assisted by a helpful tailwind on the home straight. ‘A’ grade enjoyed 15 minutes of track 2 with a prime thrown in just to keep the pace up (won by Steve Fitzpatrick St George) before another 20 on track 3. MTB’r Shaun Lewis - Yeti didn’t want to leave it to a bunch sprint and so broke away initially with Andrew Wyper - Bankstown and took the second prime but Wyper dropped off the pace and was replaced by Ben Brooks- Jelly Belly with two laps to go the remnants of the chasing bunch regrouped and Steve Fitzpatrick took out the sprint from Ben Brooks with Richard Volebregt third. B Grade also enjoyed a fast intro on track 2 and even before moving to track 3 a number of riders were getting dropped by the aggressive riding of Horse Hobbs and Angry Anderson (both Sutherland) a few more attacks on track 3 saw Gary Libro Sutherland take the prime and then go on the attack with Peter Spence - CATS (QLD). This caused the chasing groups to splinter with only Hobbs able to rejoin the lead pair with 2 laps to go Spence showed his track sprinting ability and took the win from Libro and Hobbs third The fast improving Simon Andrews - Sutherland took out the C Grade sprint from Graham Horn (Sutherland) and Bob Knezevic (Sutherland). Daryl Moylan won the prime.
Those who had recovered from the scorching hot xmas day (40c) made an effort to rid themselves of the excess trimmings by racing on Boxing day on a relatively cool (25c) evening. Sam Lee (St George) showed his sprinting prowess by taking out the two primes on offer and then by breaking away with Josh Flemming with two laps to lead Josh over the line to win. The bunch sprint was taken out by Oliver Reitmeir for third. With the fast finishing Chris Guillan promoted to ‘A’ grade, Adam Proudlock (Southern Cross) led home the bunch sprint only to be rolled on the line by Daniel Thomson (Sutherland) with Evan Palmer (Penrith) third. Graham Horn (Sutherland) finally beat his nemesis Mark Nicholls (Sutherland) to take the C grade bunch gallo[. Mark said “I thought I would give Horny a Xmas present, he has been such a good boy this year”. James Eades (Southern Cross) took third place.
Twilight Racing - 19th December A hot summers day (32c) with a steady southerly breeze greeted the return of the fair-weather riders. Chris Sutton (FDJ) and Sam Lee (St George) started the ‘A’ grade race with a breakaway on the first lap and were left dangling out front for a while until riders in one and two’s bridged across. Eventually two evenly numbered bunches formed with the rear group too disorganised to pull in the front group of 10 riders. Peter Hatton (Clarence St) easily took out the bunch gallop after straightening up Daniel Brickell’s line and overhauling Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly) who took second and Perren Delacour third. Primes also went to Pete and Ben. In B Grade despite numerous attempt to break up the field it came down to a bunch gallop with recently turned U/19 rider Chris Guillan (Southern X) easily taking out the sprint from Joe McDonnell (Illawarra) and Gavin Bates (St George) third. Primes also went to Chris and Joe. Mel Providente (Lidcome/Auburn) easily took out the C grade bunch sprint with Bob Knezevic (Sutherland) second and Peter Lang (Sutherland) third.
Twilight Racing - 12th December A sultry stormy summers day saw the rain petering out into the evening but this was too late for most riders and so the race fields were only just in the double digits. With the track still a little damp riders took the corners with caution and there were no escapees in any of the grades resulting in bunch sprints for all grades. Sam Lee (St George) took out the Prime and the sprint to win the A grade event from International Sports Journo Jeff Jones with MTB’r Dave Greening (SORCC) in third. The Guillan brothers (Southern Cross) continued their winning ways with Chris taking out B grade from Matt Hobbs (Sutherland) and Daniel Thompson (Sutherland) followed by younger brother Matt winning C grade from Graham Horn (Sutherland) and Simon Andrews (Sutherland) Twilight Racing - 5th December With cool temperatures, a gusty southerly and overcast skies threatening to unleash its fury, we were expecting Hugo Weaving and Keanu Reeves to roll up ! For those of you who stayed away no it didn’t rain and yes we had some great racing!. ‘A’ grade saw Mark Renshaw (FDJeux) ‘enjoying’ his first ride back after a couple of weeks off by taking out the prime and the sprint from Perrin Delacour (Yeti) with last weeks winner Charlie Topfer (Lidcombe Auburn) third. One of the 3 Amigos aka Murray Walsh (Sutherland) enjoyed his last win in B grade (now promoted to A) by taking out the bunch sprint from Gavin Drury (Illawarra) and Adam Proudlock (SORCC). The C grade sprint was won by the rapidly improving Lachlan Wainwright (SORCC) who also won a promotion to B grade, Phil Loxley (Sutherland) was second and the Fox Mark Nicholls (Sutherland) third
Gold, Gold, Gold! Congratulations to Mark Nichols who has now more Gold Medals than Fabio after winning the Australian Masters Games Criterium in Canberra and the Veteran Championships recently
Twilight Race Series - 7th Nov 2003 The A grade race saw Perren Delacour (Yeti) make up for his 7th place in the National MTB championships by taking his frustations out on the bunch. With 3 laps remaining Delacour broke away from an escape group of 5 to take the win, meanwhile ‘Kilo’ Kev Aubrey (Bankstown) caught the remaining escapees on the last lap allowing the ‘fresh’ legs of Charlie Topfer and Warren Scott to take out the bunch sprint.
B grade saw a great solo effort by junior Chris Guillan (Southern X) to take out a well deserved win with the bunch lead home be Scott Ford and Chris Harris (SSCC)
The C Grade big men were dissapointed with having to do the last 2 laps on the hilly #3 circuit which saw the wily Luke Davidson take the win with Matt Davison (Southern X) and Graham Horn taking out the minor places
J-man Australian MTB XC Champion After spending a season battling it out with the roadies over the cobbles in flanders combined with competing in the European and UCI world Cup MTB races saw Josh Flemming in great form to take out the XC champs held at Mt Beauty.
Club Tour - Bundanoon Le SSCC gruppetto departed Sutho’ at 7.30 on Saturday morning accompanied by overcast skies and a Northerly tailwind which saw them clock up a fast 60km to Wollongong. The first stop at the North Beach Cafe saw most riders enjoying a Coffee and cake except for the Cookie Monster who devoured a Seafood Basket and Chips much to the amazement of Directeur Sportifs Col and Ken. A quick stop at the bottom of Macquarie Pass saw the riders lighten their load and prepare for the ascent. Fastest Time went to the Cookie monster (32mins) who seemed to be spurred on by the thought of Hot Apple and Cherry Pies at the Robertson Pie shop. The handicap winner and Queen of the Mountain was awarded to Anna Sutton who outrode many of the more experienced riders. (It was a peas souper London fog at the top of the Pass). After Cookie had gone through the Pie shop like a plague of locusts it was off to the Bundanoon Hotel. (At this point Matt ‘Miles’ Hobbs and Kilo Col Young decided that they would get more K’s in by riding home and then ride back again the next morning in order to get over 400km for the weekend). Greeted at Exeter by ex SSCC president Don Talintyre (and a rain squall) the bunch sped into Bundanoon and admired ‘Dons’ mural at the Cafe before sampling the goods inside. Ex Pro Richard ‘Virenque’ Vial also rode down (on his Aprilla to join us for dinner and port!) Pre dinner drinks mixed with local grape testing provided a jovial evening as the awards were doled out (can’t remember much about the rest of the evening). Next morning (a slow and fragile departure helped on by a Southerly tailwind) saw the grupetto oscillate their way along some of the more testing country roads before stopping for refreshments in Picton. Col and Matt had ridden out to meet us and set the tempo for the dash across the Appin block. Halting briefly at Sublime Point Lookout for a quick coke top up and we were ready for the charge home. Many thanks to Col Poulton and Ken Martin for their encouragement and support, George at Endeavour Cycles for the Support Vehicle and Spares The last Saturday race of the year was a double header a 15 lap Handicap and a Scratch race. The Handicapper had it on the nail as the scratch group of John Peters, Craig Handley and Ian Bradford swept up the leading groups with one lap to go which saw Bradford up the tempo on the last lap to enable the scratchies their first and only win of the year ! Those not racing the next day had a Points Race with Paul Mckenzie taking the line honours from Greg Gee and Andrew Hunter
Sunday saw a number of the SSCC Masters take to Eastern Creek Motor Racing circuit for the ‘Southern Hemisphere Cup’ run by the Waratah Vets. Congratulations to Head Commisaire Ken Martin who managed to control the 240 riders who at one time managed to form 1 huge pack (that’s what I call a bunch). Bello Gary Libro took 1st in the B grade, Mark Nichols 1st in E grade, Kerry Percy 1st in D and John Peters 5th in the A grade.
A cool clear 20c day with gusty southerly winds ensured no one would get a free ride to the finish at the SSCC Club Road Championships held at Dapto last weekend. The Illawarra Cycling Club which normally races on every saturday throughout winter kindly hosted the event in conjunction with their club race. The road course utilises most of the ‘Ken Dinnerville Handicap ’ circuit and has a bit of everything, climbs, decents, crosswinds and a fast downhill finish A race report is available on Cyclingnews Trophies will be awarded at the club presentation Night Many thanks to all the Illawarra members for the great receptiom and tough racing. We hope to return before not too long !
The last Watkins Espresso race for the ‘Winter’ season was held on Saturday morning. We would like to thank ‘Watkins Real Estate’ who have generously sponsored the Series, please support them with your patron.Special thanks to Craig/s, Ian, Ken and Renee for running the races.
In A grade Darren Cash took out an easy win from Barista Handley and Daniel Thompson. Illawarra dominated the B Grade with David Stewart and Dylan Forbes breaking away early in the race leaving Jeff Gray with the bunch sprint! C Grade Fox, Mark Nichols showed his sprint skills by taking a clear win against Greg Gee and Graham Horn
Hornsby to Warners Bay (inc State RR Champs) Well done to Cookie, Willy, Cashy, Col and Daniel who all competed in this tough road race. Cookie again was on the attack creating the winning break but unable to go with the attacks in the end and having to contest the bunch gallop
TT, Olympic Sprint, 5 Lap H’cap Omnium Fantastic weather for kites but a bit dodgy for bikes ! With the gusty southerlies blowing across the track good bike handling skills were mandatory. The ever improving Wayne Druery took out the 1 lap TT (1.15.84) from a standing start. The Olympic Sprint went to the team of Paul Mckenzie, Chris Booth and Gary Libro. The outmarkers took out the Handicap with Gary Buckley taking line honours from in Chris Booth and John Lee
The Omnium Champ was Wayne Druery with Paul McKenzie and Chris (i’ve only just got off the Iron lung) Booth second and third respectively.

Caught by the remaining 15 strong peleton 5km before Glen Innes he was unable to make the final break but finished a creditable 9th overall !
15 lap Handicap Meanwhile back at the ranch (Waratah Park).... Chris Booth again provided the Handicapper with a sob story that he hadn’t even touched the bike since last week yet once on the bike his cadence looked like a Moulinex in overdrive as his group easily kept the scratchies at bay along with Anna Sutton and Roger Tuckwell second and third respectively. Fastest rider was John Peters who managed to hang on to Young Col Young and flick him in the sprint after having sat on all race

15 Lap Handicap - #3 Circuit An all in Handicap on another beautiful winters days (except for the NW Wind!) saw outmarker Chris Booth (aka The Flying Fox) managing to keep the packs at bay by taking out the handicap from a rapidly chasing Graham Horn and Mark Nichols. Fastest Time went to Scratchman Craig Handley
Club Snowball Pointscore The C/D grade race saw Chris Booth listen attentively to Ken Martin in the pre race pep talk (when Ken informed them on how points were to be awarded ie 1st lap - 1point, 2nd Lap 2 points etc) and whilst the rest of the bunch waited for the whistle to blow Chris sailed to an easy win over Graham Horn and Greg Gee The A/B race saw a very aggresive attack on the starting lap by Colin Reay who was determined to get on the score board (at least once) and then the bunch woke up.. Handley, Peters and Aubrey (2nd overall) shared the points around over the subsequents laps until Greg McFarlane showed his endurance by holding off the gruppetto and amassing an unassailable lead. Unfortunately a fall by John Anderson at the bottom of #2 circuit saw the race halted and John was taken to St George Hospital for a check up (which he passed ok) but he is still looking for the dog that chewed on his ear whilst he was lying on the track.

TTT Handicap (2 x 5laps) A warm winters day (20c) with clear blue skies and a light southerly breeze was a perfect setting for honing the TTT skills over the hilly #3 circuit. Techniques such as bombing through and dropping off the back without a word allowed the more experienced team of outmarkers (made up off Kerry Percy, Chris Booth, Mark Nichols and Roger Crawford (RBCC)) easily hold off the 5 chasing teams to take out the first 5 lap event After a short breather and team ‘discusions’ the second 5 lap race saw the scratch Team of Paul O’Neill, Craig Handley, Ian Bradford and Gary Libro romp away with the win. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Ian for a speedy recovery.
Tasman Shield TT
A beautiful fresh Winters Morming (18c) with a clear blue sky and a light southerly breeze ensured that the riders soon warmed up on the undulating 17km out and back circuit from Waterfall to Helensburg. A number of new members ‘enjoyed’ the test of truth whilst some riders were disapointed with their results which had seen their training hampered by the deluge of rain over the last 6 weeks (only in Sydney !).
It came as no surprise when Geoff Cook took out the event with the fastest ride completing the 17km in 24.47 minutes beating Phil Almond’s previous course record by more than 2 minutes
Thanks to Graig Hawkins for his roving Patrol !
After celebrating Steve Williams Birthday the night before (and into the early hours of the morning) combined with the monsoon rain only three nutters (Ewen Dan and Perrin) were seen out on their pushbikes the next morning floating majestically through Taren Point in search of the mythical ‘Dry Spot’. Meanwhile at the clubhouse the Espresso machine hummed and the coverage of the Giro pumped out the 30C heat from the roads to Avezzano and this seemed much easier than chewing the handlebar! See you all at round III where we may be featuring a Pedalo event !
Josh Flemming is currently based in Belgium riding for a local team ‘Bouwelse Wielervrienden’ and will be competing in the St Wendal and Fort Williams (Scotland) World cups races in May. Report from J _Man from round 2 of the Belgium Cup at Langdorp. May 11th
“The course was similar to last weeks Europa Cup.and contained a strong field of over 80 riders including Filip Meirhaeghe. At the start a small chute allowed for only 8 riders across and I started on the 4th row which was ok. After a fair amount of chasing I managed to work my way up to the front group and as we came to the feed zone the pace had dropped off a little and about 15 riders had bunched up. Got a little squashed going into the first short single track and as we came back out onto the gravel road a group of 6 had gapped the group I was in. The legs where feeling good so I managed to just about get back on to the lead group but Filip and 2 other riders had broken away.. I slowly caught and passed the two breakaway riders and moved into 2nd spot with 3rd on my wheel.until he punctured from hitting a tree root.on a gnarly descent. So I kept on pushing and finished in 2nd place 2.15min down on Filip. It’s the 2nd Round of the Europa cup next week then i’m off to the World cup at St Wendal”

7/3/03 With the St Mary’s Criterium on the next day the A graders wanted an ‘easy one’ in order to prepare for it. What they got was 40mins of flat out racing with everyone trying to escape yet not wanting to work ! Despite the best efforts of Sean Higgerson (Randwick Botany) and Troy Glennon (St George) the remaining bunch gathered for a bunch finish with Campbell Kerr (Sutherland) the crowd favourite to take the win, but fate deflated his chances (rear tyre) and his teammate Paul O’Neill took the sprint with ease from Sean Higgerson and Kevin Berkley (Parramatta)
Coming down to a bunch finish, Clayton Butler and teamate Nelson Santos (Lidcombe Auburn) showed their leadout skills to take out the B grade sprint with Phil Neves (Sutherland) third
The steadily improving Randwick Botany rider Michael Murdoch took the strung out bunch sprint from Peter Lang (Sutherland) and recently turned full time Pro bike rider Martin Snowden (Sutherland)
Chris Booth (Sutherland) scorched up the home straight to take the sprint from Ian Reid (Waratah) and team-mate Brice Pollard (Sutherland) in the D grade race
28/02/03 The threatening southerly change never arrived and a warm (28c) and humid evening greeted the riders. The Korean National team were determined to get in the places and with their “Brownie” style of riding all riders had to be alert. However Klayton Smith (Clarence Street) was in an attacking mood and went solo with 5 laps remaining. Despite being caught by Cho Hu Sang (Korea) with one lap to go Smith still had enough left in the tank to drop Sang on the climb to take out the win. Sang finished second and the chasing bunch driven by Kev Aubrey (who had a nasty elbow twitch but with no takers) lost out to You Tae Bok (Korea) for third.
Matthew Lucas (Randwick Botany) took the B Grade sprint from Mitchell Pearson (Eurobodalla) and Chris Guillan (Southern Cross)

14/02/03 Shaun Higgerson again eluded the bunch after breaking away after the second prime of the evening. Despite an organised chase including Chris Sutton (FDJ), Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly) and Jeff Hopkins (BSCC) Higgerson continued to gain time and soloed to victory. The chasing group was swamped on the last lap with Hopkins still able to take the bunch sprint from Warren Scott (St George). Primes were taken by Brent Dawson (Jelly Belly) and Warren Scott.

Geoff Cook (aka Cookie Monster) Geoff is awaiting more information on his options (something about upgrading to 24valves) but is stable and up and about.
7/02/03 Jeff Hopkins (Bankstown) took the bunch gallop with ease always keeping to the fore in the frantically fought last kilometre. A light southerly meant a finish into a headwind and the sprinters showed how to turn up the power on the home straight with Steve Fitzpatrick second (St George) followed by Campbell Kerr (Sutherland) and Paul Rowney (SOBE-Canondale). Last weeks winner Shaun Higgerson cheered on from the sidelines as he appeared to be suffering with a groin strain. The two primes were taken by Fitzy and Wozza (St George)
The B Grade pace was high again with some serious efforts put in to shell out the weaker riders and lose a few sprinters in the last five laps. The sprint for the line was into a headwind as the first riders found to their dismay and Gavin Bates (St George) timed it perfectly for the win from Grant Patrick (Southern Cross). Alex Frame (Sutherland) managed to roll Phil Bray (Sutherland) for third. Primes were taken by Maclachlan and Hood.
Promotion is on the way for the C grade winner Trent Butler (Lidcombe - Auburn) who took advantage of the change to the hillier #3 circuit for the last couple of laps by keeping the pace high and ensuring a strung out bunch finish from Mark Goodwin (Sutherland) and Peter Lang (Sutherland). Prime winners were Lindsay and Wild.
The D grade sprint was taken out by Chris Booth (Sutherland) from Ian Reid (Waratah Vets) and Scott Mills (St George)
We will be attempting to have some video clips from the race (courtesy Paul O’Neill Productions) shortly
31/01/03 Shaun Higgerson (Randwick Botany) surprised himself by outsprinting Chris Sutton (FDJ) to take the win on a cool (22c) and blustery evening. Higgerson decided it was time to put the hammer down after the second Prime and Sutton managed to bridge across from a small chase group. The pair then gained time as the bunch kept misfiring like a V8 commodore with water in the line. Campbell Kerr (Sutherland) took the bunch gallop from last weeks winner (and now NSW Madison Champ, Steve Fitzpatrick (St George). The two ther primes were taken by Dale and Paul O’Neil (Sutherland)
The B Grade pace was high again over the last three laps with the stayers trying to get rid of the sprinters to no avail as it all came back together on the home straight. The rapidly improving Luke Cridland (Southern X) took the sprint (and the last prime) from strongmen John MacKenzie (Eastern Suburbs) and Murray Walsh (Sutherland)
Peter Williams (Sutherland) took out the C grade bunch sprint from Trent Butler (Lidcombe - Auburn) and the Sutho club treasurer Martin Snowdon
The D grade sprint was taken out by the World Champion Sprinters Father, Barry Eadie (Sutherland) from Sharon Lane and Bruce Pollard
24/01/03 Steve Fitzpatrick (St George) and Jeff Hopkins (Bankstown) showed some perfect timing by putting the hammer down on the last lap in order to bridge across to the breakaway duo of Peter Hatton (TREK) and Paul Rowney (SOBE - Cannondale). Fitzpatrick took the sprint from Hoppy with Rowney taking third and Hatton in fouth. Last weeks winner Shaun Higgerson (Randwick) took the incentive early on in the race ‘enjoying’ 20mins off the front and taking a Prime for his effort whillst the sporadicly working bunch then saw Mtb’rs Hatton and Rowney escape, exchanging positions with Higgerson in the closing stages of the race only to be caught on the line in the A grade race.
After a high speed last three laps the B Grade bunch was spread out and saw strong riding by Phil Neves (Sutherland) to take the sprint from Bates (St George) and Walsh (Sutherland)
C grade bunch gallop was taken by the fast finishing Aitchson (Southern Cross) from Willaims and Goodwin (Sutherland)
The D grade sprint was taken out yet again by Ian Reid (Waratah) from Chris Booth and Barie Eadie (Sutherland)
17/01/03 The Australian Road and TT championships had lured away the usual big hitters from the field and everyone thought that tonight the Podium girls would be planting their kissers on them. Numerous attacks were launched but without the usual firepower to sustain them a bunch finish was destined. The last time up the hill saw Shaun (HavaChat) Higgerson (Randwick Botany) managing to talk the other riders off his wheel despite giving them a lengthy lead out. Trackstars Steve Fitzsimmons (St George) and Kevin Aubrey (Bankstown) took the minor placings
Practice makes perfect fot B grade winner Andrew Kildare (St George) who had been trying to work the ‘3 laps to go move’ for the last couple of weeks and finally succeeded taking the win with ease as the bunch galloped in some 10 seconds behind headed by Phil Neves and Murray Walsh (Sutherland) With a Full moon on the horizon (and someone swearing that a Werewolf was riding C grade). All sorts of strange happenings occured withr some gravel rash for a couple of riders (thankyou St Johns). With the last couple of laps held over the more demanding #3 circuit Peter Williams (Sutherland) held off Lee Dutton (Sutherland) and Janelle Lindsay (Randwick Botany) D Grade saw the wily fox Ian Reid (Waratah) worked over by Luke Davsion and Matt Guillan (Southern Cross) in the #2 circuit dash.
Special Race Report by Abdu When the tour bus arrived and unloaded the tifosi you knew it was going to be a special night ! Yes, the Caveman was back for 2003 and the other riders knew they were going to be in for a hard night. Renowned for shouting words of encouragement to the other riders a queue quickly formed at the St Johns Aid station for cotton wool to stuff in their ears. The race got underway and it didnt take long for the ‘King of Kogarah’ to show the crowd what he had as he lead the bunch along the home straight pushing a huge 56x11 (at 5 or 6 rpm) his kneecaps looking like champagne corks about to pop! Being able to climb about as well as an Arthurs Seat Chairlift saw him yoyo from the front to the back of the bunch each lap. The last lap saw the Caveman hover off the front of the bunch and then as the sprint started he managed to stealthily work his way backwards finally finishing in 6th place. His fans didn’t care where he finished and immediately mobbed him ($15 per hour each from crowds r us) WHAT A LEGEND!!!
Congratulations to local rider Chris Sutton (fdj) on taking out the final Stage of the Jayco Geelong Bay Classic and gaining third on overall GC
10/01/03 With Matt White (USPS) and Graham Brown (Ceramica Panaria) added to the Start List, fridays race was looking like it was going to be a warm up for the upcoming Australian Championships. Steve Williams launched the first attack opening a small gap and then the heavens opened reducing the usual hot and sticky bitumen track to a slippery dip surface. The MTBr’s all thought this was great and MTBr Prof Pete (Trek) took the 1st prime as the main group slowly built up speed and reeled him in. Despite efforts by numerous riders to slip away White was always vigilant at the front in ensuring no advantage was given. The last lap saw the Sprinters line up behind White and Brown as they both powered up the hill and onto the finish straight with Brownie holding off White and Jeff Hopkins (Bankstown) for the win. Justin Case (Trek) earned his ticket to A grade by taking a flyer with 2 to go and held off the rapidly closing B grade bunch led by young Luke Cridland (Southern Cross). The ever youthful fox, Mark Nichols (Sutherland) took out the C grade gallop from Williams (Sutherland) and Lee Dutton (Sutherland)
Tour of Noosa Daniel Bricknell (Sutherland) recently competed in and won the Tour of Noosa B grade after winning the Hill Climb finishing 2nd in the Criterium and 4th in the road race. Daniel has been gaining consistent results throughout the year with an 8th in the Club National Time Trial and a 4th in the C grade Hornsby to Swansea despite going off course! Daniel works at Endeavour Cycles and enjoys testing out the latest Pinarello and Williers!
The monthly club meeting (normally held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7 pm at the clubhouse) has been postponed to the following week (8th Jan 2003) due to planned festivities !
03/01/03 Steve Wooldridge (St George) showed his World Class Colours by easily taking the sprint from Perron Delacour (SORRC - YETI) Chris Sutton (St George fdj) and the hill climber Kevin Aubrey (Bankstown) in fouth. Wooldridge and Sutton will be representing FDJ-NSW in the upcoming Jayco Geelong Bay Classic with Rodney Mcgee, Mark Renshaw and Chris Pascoe. Local celebrity Kevin Nichols will also be competing in the ‘B’ series and his daugher Kate will be competing in the Womens Series. The B grade race saw plenty of attacking but calmed down with 3 laps to go allowing the sprinters to compose themselves and saw Scott Ford (Sutherland) holding off Rene Fortunato (Sutherland) and Matthew Hood. C grade saw the fast finishing Matt Hobbs (Sutherland) holding off Ryan Fold (SORCC) and Graham Horn (Sutherland) D Grade contested over the fast #2 circuit was won by Ian Reid of Waratah Vets from Barry Eadie (Sutherland) and Chris Booth (Sutherland)
Twilight Racing 27/12/02 Steve Williams (Sutherland) seems to be in good form for the upcoming Nationals Championships with an aggresive ride last friday which saw him active in every break. The pace was on from the gun with the race looking more like an elimination with riders dropping out each lap. First to be eliminated was Kevin Donovan who complained that the 180km ride up Macquarie Pass hadn’t warmed him up sufficiently. The early break of Williams, Cook (Sutherland) and Anderson (Caravello) saw a well working chase group headed by Josh Flemming (SORCC - FELT), Brian Appleyard (Sydney), Kevin Aubrey (Bankstown), Klayton Smith (Caravello) and the Prof Pete Hatton (SORCC) plus the survivors bring back the break with 10 minutes to go, only to see eventual winner Williams and Flemming disapear into the twilight with Appleyard winning the bunch sprint. The B grade race appeared subdued this week with a bunch sprint concluding the racing which saw Rene Fortunato (Sutherland) still foxing in B grade allowing Luke Tallis (St George) to take out the bunch sprint and last weeks C grade winner Chris Gilliam (Southern Cross) to take third. A last lap on curcuit number 3 allowed strong man Lee Dutton (Sutherland) to take out the C grade sprint from Ryan Fold (SORCC) and Matt Hobbs (Sutherland)
Its a Boy! Congratulations to Mark and Lisa Wall on the birth of their son Brodie (on 10/12/02 9lb 10oz) he has already teamed up with his older brother Riley in the twilight ‘Go Daddy’ cheer squad.
Twilight Racing 20/12/02 Kenny and his elves were full of Xmas cheer with Prizes of Mince Pies and Xmas Puddings being awarded not only for the race winners but also for Primes and the hard fought Lanterne Rouge. Ken Martin and Mick De Luca also presented the St. Johns Ambulance with some christmas cheer in appreciation of their attendance and support throughout the year. Jono Hall (Illawarra + World Champion Duathelete) ensured a Xmas pudding was going home with him by setting a blistering pace which saw the race split into a pieces, Hall, Klayton Smith (Caravello) and Brendan Shipp (St. George) worked solidly together to extend their lead over the chasing bunches with Hall not wanting to risk the Pud to a bunch sprint attacking Smith and Shipp with 2 laps to go and managed to build a small gap which gave him the win. Dave Greening (Razorback) secured the B Grade Pud and his ticket to A Grade by taking out the bunch sprint from Matthew Hood (St. George) and Rochelle Gilmore (Bankstown). The podium filled with Southern Cross riders who left the old foxes standing when Chris Gillian, Patrick Grant and Matthew Wild took out the C grade spint
Twilight Racing 13/12/02 Klayton Smith (Caravello) enjoyed his win after taking out the ‘A’ grade sprint from Brent Dawson (Jelly Belly)and Chris Sutton (fdjeux). The high pace instigated by Smith from the start caused a split in the pack after only 2 laps with two groups forming, the 9 man breakaway group instigated by Smith saw the front runners (including Williams and Cook) easily keep the main grupetto at bay despite desperate attempts to try and bridge across. Renee Fortunato (Sutherland) is keeping the boys honest in B grade with a 2nd again in the bunch sprint with Dave Greening (Razorback) just managing to hold her off. Justin Case (SORCC - Trek) showed plenty of aggression during the race but was unable to maintain the break. Blake Field (St George) gets his reward for winning C Grade for the last couple of weeks by getting promoted to B grade.
